A WEEKLONG CELEBRATION capped by a free, family-friendly festival on Saturday, April 8, Love, Peace & Hip Hop brings upwards of 10,000 attendees to Columbia’s Main Street each year. Attendees enjoy the best and brightest live performers, DJs, B-Boy dance crews, hip-hop visual artists, and craft and fashion vendors.
‘80s hip-hop duo Kid N Play, this year’s headliner, will deliver an energetic stage show with their positive, message-oriented music for all ages. This iconic duo, once known for Kid’s hi-top fade haircut—which stood ten inches high at its peak—continues to deliver the fun with their trademark Kick Step, otherwise known as the Funky Charleston.
“Going into year five of the festival, we really wanted to focus on fun. Kid N Play personifies just that,” said Love, Peace & Hip-Hop founder FatRat da Czar.
Another big focus for the festival this year is unity. As World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day continues to grow in size and scope, the planning committee for the festival boasts an inclusive array of local community representatives.
“Similar to how we unite spectators on Hip-Hop Family Day,” explained Czar, “I wanted to unite the city’s protectors and promoters of the culture by moving towards a committee system.”
And, as in years past, this alcohol-free event donates all soft drink and water proceeds to two local non- profit organizations that offer direct services to the community. In addition, they’ve expanded their partnerships in education, art, economic development, and family stability—with a special focus on health care, as evidenced by their title sponsor, WellCare of South Carolina.
Free and open to all, Columbia’s World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day is a day to come together for peace, love, unity, and a really fun time. Don’t miss it!
